Now, with that knowledge, go back and watch Laura Dern’s performance.

This means that the entire cast, but specifically Laura Dern, had to make almost an entire movie doing basically improv. He was literally writing this as they were filming it. When David Lynch set out to make this film he had no idea where the story was going to go. I get everything from “Lynch apologist” to “you’re only pretending you knew what it was about.” (Exact quotes mind you!) But here’s the real reason why I loved this film and it has nothing to do with one of my favorite directors or the crazy, disconnected story. I catch a lot of flak for liking this film. It’s funny to think this movie won three Oscars and the only two people who really deserved it (Williams and Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto) were shut out. The best performance given wasn’t by either of the lead characters but by Michelle Williams for her understated and powerful portrayal as the spurned housewife. With that said though I’m resigned to think that the amount of praise for this film was not justified. It’s truly one of the most beautifully filmed movies of the decade. On the contrary I enjoyed it and thought that the cinematography was exceptional. It’s not that I thought the movie was awful. I have to admit I was guilt-tripped into including this film on my list by my wife who I think would have planted this in her own top ten list by the sound of her chastising me when I first drew up my own list. got the love from the critics and indie film fans but honestly it’s James Spader at his absolute creepiest at times that carries this film. As the film progresses their relationship turns from slightly off to downright bizarre (unless, of course, you know, you’re into the whole sadomasochistic thing, then its o.k.). She gets a job as a secretary (hence the title) for a demanding boss played by James Spader. How best to describe this film? How about it’s a movie about finding “the right one”? Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a young woman recently released from a mental hospital. We film fans all know that the best part about watching movies is discussing them afterwards and I hope this list generates some decent dialogue.

Please feel free to leave comments though with movies you think I missed, movies you think I over or underrated or general comments. So, if your favorite indie art-house film from the 2000’s isn’t on this list I whole-heartedly apologize. Therefore there are literally entire years where I fell behind on movie watching and am just now catching up.

But I mention this rule only because this past decade was also the one in which all three of my children were born. Sounds like an over-simplification I know. Also the number one qualifier for this list is that I had to have actually seen the film. Probably more than everyone I know with the exception of maybe three people, but I am not a film critic, nor do I fancy myself as one. Now this list should really be taken with a grain of salt. I’ve seen a lot of these lists floating around the web and to be honest there isn’t one that I could agree with on more than say 15 films so I decided to take matters into my own hands. So, simply put this is one man’s list of the top 50 films of the past decade.
